PIQUA – Effective immediately, Piqua High School will rebrand itself from the “Piqua Indians” to the “Piqua Football Team,” pending the adoption of a new name, the Piqua Athletic Department announced Thursday.
This is not a final renaming for the school’s athletic teams. This is a temporary name to be used until someone can come up with something decent.
“Everyone’s been just looking at us, waiting for us to change our name. We saw what they did with the football team in Washington, and figured they had some pretty smart people making those decisions, so we are just kinda following their model,” said Athletic Director Jeff McDoo.
The renaming applies to all sports, and the “soccer team” is thrilled with the idea of calling their sport “football” again. Other sporting teams are absolutely livid, particularly the bowling team, who tends to be a little more whiny than the contact sports kids.
School administration has reminded students that the “Football Team” name is only temporary.
The school will continue the process of retiring its former name, with hopes to be entirely rid of it on physical and digital spaces before the school year begins. Athletic Director Jeff McDoo said the team wants to include fans, business partners and alumni in the renaming process.
“It’s a rebranding process that takes months. If you want to do it right, you have to take a deep breath, take a step back and go through the process,” he said. “We want to hear from every Piqua citizen on the matter before we take any next steps.”
A handful of crowd sourced names have already made their way to the Miami County Bugle Caller, with names such as the Edisons, Sewage Folk, Crazy Martins, Swamp Dragons, and Pacifiers making the rounds.
In the meantime, the school has released modified sports uniforms, only replacing the “Indian logo” with a big ol’ P. The school intends to keep the exact same color scheme, no matter what the mascot changes to.
“It feels organic and natural to do this. I love the look of what we’ve done. It’s really strong, and will only get better. The new will go up, and the old will go down,” said McDoo.
Fans will be able to purchase Piqua Football Team merchandise from Fanatics.com and Piqua Official Sportz Shop in the coming days.
